Book Signing Reflections
Last May 18th was truly special. Terry Decrescenzo and her wonderful wife Carol Cushman graciously opened their beautiful Studio City home to host a poolside book signing party for me.
Although only a handful of my own invitees could make it, Terry and Carol’s friends turned out in full force—and what a delightful, fascinating crowd they were! Among the guests were a former New York Times critic, the Executive Director of the One Archives (where my memoir will soon have a home), Project Angel Food’s CEO Richard Ayoub, author Nick Nolan, and so many other captivating personalities.
One of the highlights was when Nick Nolan read a hilarious chapter from my memoir featuring the unforgettable Jackie Rogers, the former model and fashion designer. Hearing those stories again had us all laughing, and I couldn’t help but smile at the memories of her wild, uninhibited adventures. Nick then led a thoughtful Q&A, gently guiding me through ten questions. When he asked what it was like growing up Jewish and gay in the projects of Minneapolis, I found myself getting emotional, the memories flooding back. I surprised myself by blurting out, with a bit of defiant pride: “Fight Back!”
I’m so grateful to share that we sold and signed many books that afternoon, with all proceeds going to Fork in the Road—a cause close to Terry’s heart. It was a day filled with laughter, meaningful conversation, and a sense of connection that I’ll cherish for a long time.
