A Day of Serendipty on Orcas Island
I woke up to a gloriously beautiful morning on Orcas Island—and to an unexpected bit of joy in my inbox. An email from the Firebird Book Awards informed me that I’d won first place in two categories: Nonfiction and LGBTQ Nonfiction. Not a bad way to start the day.
Matthew and I strolled into the village, a charming little place with just the right mix of old and new. At the local bookstore, we struck up a conversation with a stylish young woman behind the counter. When I asked who the book buyer was, she raised an eyebrow and asked, “Why? Is there something special you’re looking for?” Pushy Larry that I am, I said, “Yes—my memoir belongs in this fascinating little shop.”
As we talked, we discovered we’d both worked in the fashion world, and soon we were swapping stories like old colleagues. Her name was Ashley, and I liked her instantly.
Afterward, we grabbed lunch at a small café, wandered through the shops, and—of course—I bought my obligatory tourist sweatshirt. Even there, I ended up chatting with the salesperson about fashion. It seemed to be the theme of the day.
That evening at dinner, Matthew got a text from two close friends who happened to be on the island, too. They invited us to join them the following night—our last—at the home of their relatives, where they were staying.
A day full of little surprises, spontaneous connections, and unexpected joy.
Wonder of wonders. Always.

This is so nice! Many greeting from Prague to you and dear Matthew.
Congrats Larry, very proud of you. I better get busy! I have not been writing, unfortunately. My life is in chaos. I am trying to sell my house and downsize, maybe even move to Mexico. The market is very quiet, unfortunately. Where is Orcas Island? Stay in touch. You are an inspiration. Jim
